Professor Smith
Chair - Search Committee
Department of Biochemistry
University of Towanda Health Sciences Center
Towanda, IA
Dear Professor Smith,
Thank you for your letter of March 6.
After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I
am unable to accept your refusal to offer me an assistant
professor position in your department.
This year I have been particularly
fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of
rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of
candidates it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.
Despite the University of Towanda's
outstanding qualifications and previous experience in
rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not
meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the
position of assistant professor in your department this May.
I look forward to seeing you then.
Best luck in rejecting future
applicants.
Sincerely,
Goddard Jones

Telecommuting/Work
at Home:
Knowledge Workers
Low
cost, high bandwidth computer information technology
coupled with the demands of two wage earner
families, differing
work/learning styles, the changing nature of business
and ecology, have made
telecommuting, in some cases, the best
way to bolster worker productivity
and health. Collaborative technologies allow group
teleconferencing; distance learning; Internet based demonstrations and
whiteboard sessions; sharing of online knowledgebases,
discussions, documents, calendars and customer
information; and secure, instantaneous and anywhere email,
web, PDA, paging and cellular phone
access. Further these collaborative communications can be
as structured or unstructured, in depth or superficial,
and spontaneous or planned
as the participants desire.
While face-to-face team and/or customer
meetings are important at times, it may not be cost
effective, necessary, beneficial or even feasible on a daily basis.
Office buildings may not become
dinosaurs overnight, but with long, stressful city
commutes, cramped cubicles, relocation costs, dual wage
earner families that have less time for their
children, escalating fuel prices and the
damaging environmental impact of roads, parking structures
and automobiles,
telecommuting and work-at-home should be considered as
alternatives for many types of workers. While the
"digital" handshake may not be as warm, in the
long term it may be more rewarding for all concerned. Further,
these advantages may apply not only to business, but
also education,
medicine,
science, art and other walks of life. Perhaps the word "tele
(far) commuting" is already obsolete since it
connotes the necessity of commuting- unnecessary,
perhaps even harmful in many instances. Perhaps we are all,
in the broadest sense, knowledge workers - wherever we work in the
global
digital economy. Some workers have better
and quicker computer and telecommunications access at
home than at work, making them more, not less
productive than if they worked in an office-
notwithstanding the already enumerated personal
and societal benefits of working at home. It is my
hope that given the above, and the death of the
factory control, repetitive hyperspecialization
notion of work, knowledge workers and companies will
increasingly reap the rewards of work at home. |

From
"What Are People For?"
by Wendell Berry
Good work finds the way between pride and despair.
It graces with health. It heals with grace.
It preserves the given so that it remains a gift
By it, we lose loneliness:
we clasp the hands of those who go before us, and the hands of those who come after us;
we enter the little circle of each other's arms,
and the larger circle of lovers whose hands are joined in a dance,
and the larger circle of all creatures, passing in and out of life, who move also in a
dance, to a music so subtle and vast that no ear hears it except in fragments.

The most important aspect
of resume writing is that it helps you focus
on what your career objectives are and
allows you to review your past experience
and abilities in this light. You should
preplan your approach to complement your
resume, references and personal
style.
Often multiple candidates
appear to have the technical and even
managerial background the position requires.
People hire because at a fundamental level
they like (relate to) the job
seeker
and feel they can trust them (personal and
professional integrity).
Also important in the
interview process is your understanding of
and sensitivity for the employer's industry
and/or business problems. Preparation is often
key. The harder your prepare, the more you
demonstrate to the potential employer your
sincerity and commitment.
